A. If the pictures aren't in the iPad's "Photos" app then they aren't on the iPad, or you transferred them to the wrong place (which might happen if you were using the iPad as a disk drive, which I've never tried).
For your 2nd question, if only the lightning connector was connected, but not your iPad, then there is no device attached (your computer just sees it as a cable with nothing on the other end), and it's always safe to remove.

Why does Best Buy promote to reserve the new iPad Mini on their website when you cannot do so?
